Newton Ferrers Raises £326 for DCRS!
We're thrilled to announce that the staff and pupils at Newton Ferrers raised an incredible £326 for DCRS.
Back in October the pupils came to school in their own clothes (mufti) and joined the fun! And their Drake House Captains, Tabby and George, led the fundraising efforts for this amazing charity.
For just 25p, they entered a competition to see who could wear the most colorful items.
There were also other exciting competitions to participate in:
- Raffle: £1 a strip, 50p for half
- Score a goal against Mr BW!: 50p a go
- Guess the name of the teddy: 50p for 2 turns
- Guess the weight of the chocolate bar (between 1000-2000g): 50p for 2 turns
- Putting nails in a sieve: 50p a turn
These funds will directly support our Destitution Pot, which helps asylum seekers in need by providing essentials like food and shelter.

A Celebration of Culture: Feast and Film Fundraiser 2024
In December 2024, we proudly celebrated the diversity of our clients, representing over 80 nationalities, with the first-ever Feast and Film Fundraiser.
Held at Leadworks Plymouth and supported by the Giveback Project, who helped us screen the powerful documentary by Suhaib Gasmelbari, the event brought people together for an evening of cultural exchange and community spirit. Guests enjoyed a variety of delicious global cuisines, lovingly prepared by six of our service users, showcasing the rich flavors and traditions from their home countries.
With a shared meal, a thought-provoking film, and meaningful discussions about asylum seekers’ experiences, the evening fostered understanding and solidarity. Thanks to the generosity of our supporters, we raised £1,067, with all proceeds going to support destitute asylum seekers. It was an unforgettable celebration of food, film, and the power of community to make a positive impact.
Thank You to Plymouth Marine Laboratory for Supporting Asylum Seekers in Need
We want to extend a heartfelt thank you to Plymouth Marine Laboratory (PML) and the members of their Sport and Social Club for raising an impressive £374.57 through their planned Plant Day and Bake Sale.
PML, a local, cutting-edge scientific research institute and charity, is dedicated to pursuing research excellence for a healthy and sustainable ocean that benefits both nature and society. The generous contribution from their event will now help provide vital support to asylum seekers with No Recourse to Public Funds who are currently destitute.
We are incredibly grateful to the PML community, and to everyone who participated. Together, we are making a real difference in people's lives.

Canvas for A Cause: Exploring Home Through Art – A Creative Success!
On Saturday, May 11th, DCRS Offices at 7 Whimple Street came alive with creativity and community spirit as we hosted "Canvas for A Cause: Exploring Home Through Art" in collaboration with Azza's Gallery. This fun drawing and painting event celebrated 'Our Home' by bringing people together to share memories, learn about different cultures, and express themselves through art.
Thanks to the generosity and enthusiasm of our participants, we raised £67.50 to support Devon and Cornwall Refugee Support’s destitution programme. We are grateful to everyone who joined us and contributed to this meaningful cause. Stay tuned for more events where we can create, celebrate, and support our community!
Conquering the Plymouth 1/2 Marathon for DCRS
Last Sunday, we cheered on Heather as she conquered the Plymouth 1/2 Marathon, raising £338 for DCRS. She finished in 2 hours and 22 minutes with a big smile on her face! Heather's dedication to DCRS's mission of advocacy and community support is inspiring.
Reflecting on her experience, Heather shared this;
"On Sunday 28th April I ran the Plymouth half marathon. I picked to raise funds for DCRS after seeing first hand in their creative club sessions the comfort, education and support they provide for refugees. I volunteer with Fotonow, and helped them in creative club by taking photos of the creative works made by service users. I am really pleased to be able to raise £338 for DCRS, their mission of advocacy and community is a message I really believe in. I finished the half marathon in 2 hours and 22 minutes with a big smile on my face!"
Let's celebrate her achievement and the difference she's made!
In 2022, Plymouth College raised over £5,800 for DCRS in a charity cycle event.
The goal was to cycle the distance from Tunisia to Plymouth in 24 hours, chosen as it is a common departure point from the African continent for those seeking asylum in Europe.
A massive thank you to all of the students that took part in the cycle and to those who donated to their amazing effort.
