The Devon and Cornwall Refugee Support charity is committed to providing specialized, impartial advice to asylum seekers in the region, helping them settle into life in Plymouth and beyond. Among their initiatives is the 'Creative Club,' where weekly workshops at The Box foster creativity and community among participants. With support from Merrydith Russell, a PhD researcher at the University of Plymouth, and Fotonow CIC, the group has been crafting creative responses to the themes and memories associated with the concept of 'home.'
Merrydith Russell, reflecting on the project, noted: "The Making of Home represents a significant milestone in our research, establishing strong ties with displaced communities in Plymouth and challenging the notion of the museum space as a catalyst for change." The project involved creative mapping exercises that explored the myriad challenges and themes individuals encounter when establishing a sense of 'home' in a new city. From reminiscing about past home experiences to engaging in community activities like cooking, the project delved into the intricate nuances of placemaking in Plymouth.
The participants shared their thoughts on the project, emphasizing its profound impact on their understanding of 'home.' One participant remarked, "It made us think more about the meaning of home, and what it means to go back to our homes. For the last few weeks, it was like we were living through our memories." The project enabled them to embrace both the positive and negative aspects of their home memories, recognizing that 'home' transcends physical space—it resides in the heart.
